British Health Officials: First Major H1N1 Vaccine Shipment “Imminent”

British public health officials said Oct. 8 that major shipments of GlaxoSmithKline’s pandemic influenza virus vaccine are “expected imminently,” although they would not set a date for an immunization program to begin.

Dr. Donaldson said the long-expected autumn wave of H1N1 in the United Kingdom has been a “slow burn,” which may give public health specialists a chance to keep the pandemic under better control.

The Health Protection Agency estimates that there were 18,000 new cases of pandemic influenza in England in the week ended Oct. 4, up by 4,000 from the preceding week. General practitioner consultation rates for influenzalike illness rose to 26.3 per 100,000 population, up from 22.2 the preceding week, the HPA stated.
