NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 18 - Men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) face an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, researchers from Taiwan reported online April 23rd in the British Journal of Dermatology.
: X5 T8 ]* w# B7 L( z, f& G, V9 i4 Z  @+ [: z2 c- Z$ {
Identifying the syndrome in men with moderate or severe male pattern baldness may allow early intervention to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, the researchers add.

& i' G% _' g: X# P  WCo-authors Dr. L.-H. Su from Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and Dr. Tony Hsiu-Hsi Chen from National Taiwan University, Taipei, note that previous studies have shown an association between male pattern baldness and hypertension, abnormal lipid profiles, obesity, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease. But since not all reports support these findings, they undertook their own study of 670 men from a population-based cohort.

' h( ]3 L" g) N3 T3 }( h. }6 BThe overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 16.6% (111/670), ranging from 14.1% (37/262) in men aged 70 years and older to 22.0% (39/177) in the 40- to 59-year-old group. In the middle group, ages 60-69, the prevalence was 15.2% (35/231).

Conversely, severe androgenetic alopecia conferred a 2.6-fold higher risk of metabolic syndrome compared to moderate androgenetic alopecia after adjusting for age, family history, and smoking status.1 k0 i2 P: _& K! w9 F) t. ]& w

Moreover, severe androgenetic alopecia was associated with a higher number of fulfilled components of metabolic syndrome, although this trend was not statistically significant, possibly due to the reduced sample size of the subgroup with grade III or higher androgenetic alopecia.

/ X  ?. G# f0 o/ `HDL cholesterol was the only individual component of the metabolic syndrome that was statistically significantly associated with male pattern baldness. The associations for the other 4 components (hypertension, waist circumference, triglycerides, and postprandial glucose) did not reach statistical significance.
( V# j# }5 f& C1 ~6 ^. l7 v0 b/ S/ m/ \
On multivariate analysis, each 1-unit increase in the cholesterol/HDL ratio increased the risk of moderate or severe androgenetic alopecia by 20%.

) A+ `3 ]/ Q6 T9 }"According to our findings, androgenetic alopecia patients are at increased risk for metabolic syndrome; therefore, vigorous investigation of the components of metabolic syndrome in androgenetic alopecia patients is indeed necessary," the authors write.

. \2 e" C3 s. ?5 E2 Z9 Z& NIn 2000, researchers analyzing data on nearly 20,000 apparently healthy men in the Physicians' Health Study found that over 11 years, male-pattern baldness was tied to an increased risk of coronary heart disease events (see Reuters Health story of Jan 24, 2000).

有这一说,凡是体内雄性激素绝对或相对过高者,多半秃顶。
