Epidemiology is the study of the origin (causality), diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of diseases or health disorders in populations. It aims to identify factors that contribute to or influence these phenomena. In Utrecht, the domain of epidemiological research is broader than most other universities and is constituted of a unique combination of internationally renowned research groups, across four faculties. We operate from the certainty that in human and animal populations, one can find descriptive or causal relations between e.g. genetic, life style and environmental factors on the one hand and the occurrence and dynamics of diseases on the other. Knowledge of these relations is essential for understanding and controlling diseases. In close interaction with medical and veterinary specialists, we aim for improved understanding of the etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of diseases, through research, dissemination and education. Unlike most groups of epidemiologists, at Utrecht University we approach the search for these associations from a highly integrated perspective including clinical, environmental, pharmacological, molecular and theoretical epidemiologists and statisticians. Due to this world-wide unique combination of research groups (see below), we can exploit complementary knowledge and expertise, to achieve an internationally leading position in human and veterinary epidemiological research. Our research concentrates on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, allergy, and infectious diseases, the latter being particularly relevant to both humans and animals.
